May 27th: Cuban Singer Anais Abreu with the Annex Quartet
The Annex Quartet 1950s-60s Cuban Music project with famed Cuban bolero singer Anais Abreu will finish our season. The project covers forgotten Cuban classics that have been revived and transcribed for string quartet with singer, and keeps with the quartets vision to push the boundaries of classical music. Furthermore, the collaboration between Annex and Ms. Abreu is unique, historical, and very personal. The Annex Quartet violist and founder, Yunior Lopez is the Artistic & Executive Producer behind the project, and happens to be the nephew of Anais Abreu. His love for Cuban music stretches back to Cuba’s vintage and golden age, which now includes his own aunt. Mr. Lopez is recognized for his work as Music Director of the Las Vegas Young Artists Orchestra while Ms. Abreu continues to perform in Havana and abroad. This project will be the first time they collaborate through a performance and commercial recording. The performances in the Canzona Chamber Series will mark Ms. Abreu’s Canadian debut.
